St.
Edward School opened in 1947 under the
auspices of Monsignor Thompson. The first
building consisted of four classrooms.
Additional rooms were added as the
enrollment grew. Building A is complete with
an Audio-Visual Room, Computer Lab, Library
and offices. This building accommodates the
elementary classes and in 1962 Building B
was built. This building services our
preschool, kindergarten, and seventh and
eighth grades and includes a faculty room.
These two buildings, a mobile classroom, and
two blacktop playing areas make a fitting
memorial to the love and devotion Monsignor
Thompson had for the children of Corona. He
died October 3rd, 1976.
Located in St. Edward's Parish, in the inner
circle of Corona, the school draws families
of various socioeconomic, and cultural
backgrounds, from all over Corona.
Parishioners of St. Edward, St. Mary
Magdalene, St. Matthew and Corpus Christi
Churches of Corona and St. Mel's of Norco
along with some non-Catholics attend the
school. Students are drawn from eighteen
elementary and four junior high school
attendance areas.
Until 1994, the staff included Religious
Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. We
remember the sisters who taught at St.
Edward’s School as we carry on their work by
offering a scholarship, by beginning each
day with the Prayer of St. Francis and
beginning each junior high period with the
invocation “St. Francis, pray for us”.
There are both full-time and part-time lay
teachers.
Government aid comes in three programs:
Title I (assisting a limited number of
students targeted for reinforcement work).
Title VI (providing some money for library,
AV, classroom materials and textbooks), and
a free milk and lunch program for eligible
students.
St. Edward School is characterized by its
level of parental support, involvement, and
commitment. A very active School Board works
on school policies, approves the budget, and
advises and assists the administration in
almost all aspects of the school’s
operation. An extremely active Parent Club
meets periodically and provides chairpersons
for numerous fundraising events, social
events and service type committees. |
